In a Malaysian warehouse or factory, anti-slip tape is graded by its grit, and the grade follows the contamination, not the name of the room: standard mineral grit for dry walkways, stair nosings, ramps and machine platforms, coarse grit for wet or oily areas and loading bays, and a resilient non-mineral grade where people are barefoot or a mop passes. Placement and preparation decide whether it lasts a year or a month.

Key takeaways
- Match the grade to the contamination, not the room: standard grit for dry walkways and nosings, coarse grit for wet or oily bays, resilient non-mineral where feet are bare.
- DIN 51130 R-ratings run from R9 (a slip angle of 6 to 10 degrees) to R13 (above 35 degrees), measured on a ramp coated with motor oil.
- On uncoated or porous concrete, grit tape needs a primer first, with roughly 15 minutes of drying time.
This is the anti-slip chapter of our guide to choosing double-sided, foam and surface-protection tapes.
Which anti-slip tape grade do you need for a Malaysian warehouse?
Choose the grade by what lands on the floor. Standard mineral grit suits dry internal walkways, stair nosings, ramps and machine platforms, and is the default in a factory or warehouse. Coarse grit belongs wherever water, oil, mud or grease arrives: loading bays, wash-down zones and covered-but-open yard edges. Resilient non-mineral grades are for barefoot and food areas.
Mineral grit is aggressive by design, which is why barefoot and food-handling areas are the exception. One manufacturer also draws a substrate line: 3M does not recommend its Safety-Walk slip-resistant materials over quarry tile in commercial kitchens, because of the constant oil exposure there — an exclusion that covers its resilient grades too. 2S Packaging’s anti-slip tape is phenolic resin-bonded sand grits on a polyvinyl chloride film carrier with a durable acrylic adhesive, specified water and solvent resistant. Hazard striping is a different job: see caution and barricade tape and the wider safety tapes range.
What do R9 to R13 slip ratings actually mean?
An R-rating comes from the DIN 51130 ramp test. A walker crosses a sample on a ramp that is tilted further and further until they slip, and the angle at which that happens sets the rating: R9 is 6 to 10 degrees, R10 is 10 to 19, R11 is 19 to 27, R12 is 27 to 35, and R13 is above 35 degrees.
The detail that changes how you read a rating is the test condition: the ramp is coated with motor oil to simulate contaminated conditions. An R-rating therefore describes a dirty surface, not a clean one, which is why R11 is the usual entry point for loading bays and R12 or R13 for food processing. 3M’s data sheet gives R13, the top band, to its coarse 700-series Safety-Walk material. Two limits: the rating belongs to the tape as supplied, not to your floor once its grit has worn flat, and an oily-ramp figure ranks products rather than predicting your own wet floor.
Where should anti-slip tape go, and where is it the wrong product?
Put anti-slip tape where a foot changes height, direction or speed: stair treads and nosings, ramps, the lip of a loading bay, machine platforms, catwalks, and the step into a lorry body. It is the wrong product when the job is showing people where to walk: that is floor marking tape.
| Where | The condition | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Internal dry walkway, machine platform | Foot traffic, dust | Standard mineral grit, 50 mm |
| Stair treads and nosings | Heel strike right on the edge | Standard grit, 50 to 100 mm |
| Loading bay lip, ramp, wash-down area | Rain, standing water, oil drips | Coarse grit, 100 to 150 mm, edges sealed |
| Barefoot or food-handling area | Bare feet, frequent washing | Resilient non-mineral grade |
| Escape route, unlit stair edge | Low light | Photoluminescent tape or a hazard-striped grade |
| Aisle, pedestrian lane, forklift zone | Wheels and feet | Floor marking tape |
Demarcation is the commonest wrong purchase here: read how to choose floor marking tape for your facility first. Keep it on the parts people cross on foot, the walking edge of a bay lip or ramp, not the wheel path a forklift or pallet truck runs down. The published service band for 2S’s anti-slip tape is minus 5 to plus 50 degrees Celsius, so check sun-exposed metal against it.
How do you install anti-slip tape so it lasts more than a month?
Almost every early failure is a preparation failure, not a product failure. 3M’s Safety-Walk data sheet is unambiguous: the surface must be clean, dry, smooth and above the minimum application temperature, and any broken or damaged surface repaired or replaced before the tape goes on. Porous concrete needs priming, and the tape is rolled down, not pressed by hand.
- Sweep, degrease and dry the area. Remove chipped, cracked or peeling paint and loose debris.
- Prime uncoated or porous concrete, and allow the primer roughly 15 minutes to dry until no tackiness remains.
- Paint bare timber first: untreated and treated wood both have to be painted before grit tape is applied.
- Cut with a blade, and round the corners of every piece cut from a roll. Square corners are where peeling starts.
- Press it down with a rubber hand roller or rubber mallet, working along the strip.
- Where individual pieces sit side by side, space them at least 1.2 cm and at most 5 cm apart.
- Seal the edges in any wet area. One 147 mL tube of 3M’s edge sealer covers roughly 22 to 30 m of tape edge.
Two practicalities: the tape cannot be torn by hand, so the installer needs a blade and a straight edge, and its adhesive is specified for strong and permanent bonding. Chalk the layout first and treat it as permanent. A layout you expect to move is a job for demarcation tape, covered in applying and removing floor marking tape.
What width should you order, and how much?
2S Packaging Sdn Bhd, an ISO 9001:2015 certified industrial tape and packaging supplier in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, supplies anti-slip tape in 25, 50, 100 and 150 mm widths on 18 m rolls, black or black and yellow, 0.3 mm to 1.5 mm thick. Use 25 mm for ladder rungs, 50 mm for walkways and stairs, and 100 to 150 mm to cover a whole tread, ramp or bay lip.
Ordering anti-slip tape is a measuring job: measure the run, add a cutting margin, round up to whole rolls, and name the substrate as well as the length when you ask for a packaging and tape solution.
What does Malaysian workplace safety law require of your floor?
The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 puts a general duty on every employer “to ensure, so far as is practicable, the safety, health and welfare at work of all his employees.”
Section 15(2)(d) extends it to any place of work under the employer’s control: “the maintenance of it in a condition that is safe and without risks to health and the provision and maintenance of the means of access to and egress from it that are safe and without such risks” — the clause a slippery ramp, stair or bay edge sits under.
Malaysia recorded 38,950 occupational injury cases in 2023, 13.8 per cent up on the 34,216 of 2022, and Selangor, where most Klang Valley warehousing sits, recorded the highest state-level increase. That argues for recording where tape was laid and when, and inspecting those areas periodically: worn grit is invisible until someone finds it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between anti-slip tape and floor marking tape?
Anti-slip tape is a traction product: abrasive grit bonded to a carrier, used to stop a foot sliding on a stair, ramp or bay edge. Floor marking tape is a demarcation product, showing where aisles and zones are. They are not interchangeable, and marking tape can itself be slippery when wet.
Can I use anti-slip tape in a commercial kitchen?
On quarry tile, 3M’s data sheet does not recommend any of its Safety-Walk grades, resilient included, because of the constant oil exposure. On other kitchen floors a resilient non-mineral grade is the answer for barefoot and wash-down areas; 2S’s tape is the mineral-grit type, so ask us what to specify.
Does anti-slip tape stick to bare concrete?
Not reliably. Uncoated or porous concrete should be primed first, and the primer needs roughly 15 minutes to dry until no tackiness remains. On dusty, crumbling or damp concrete, grit tape lifts within weeks. The surface must also be clean, dry, smooth and above the minimum application temperature.
