If you ship a steady volume of cartons every month, custom printed tape usually works out better than plain tape plus a branded label. One printed roll replaces two consumables and one labour step: there is no label SKU to buy, store and reorder, no second pass over each carton to apply it, and no “label fell off in the truck” failure, because the print is part of the tape itself. On top of that, printed tape is working tamper evidence — a resealed carton cannot be closed with your own print — and it turns every carton into a moving advertisement from your dock to the customer’s door. Below is how MOQ actually works, what designs print well on OPP, and an honest framework for the cost comparison. You can see the product itself on our custom printed OPP tape page.

Quick answer

If you ship a steady monthly carton volume, custom printed OPP tape usually beats plain tape plus a branded label — one consumable, one sealing pass, and branding that cannot fall off in transit.

  • Replaces two consumables (tape + label SKU) and one labour step per carton
  • Typical minimum order is measured in cartons of rolls, so it suits regular shippers, not one-off runs
  • Artwork is printed into the tape, so it survives handling, rain and truck heat

How does MOQ work for printed tape, and why is there one?

Printed tape is a print run, not an off-the-shelf pick. Your artwork has to be made into a printing plate (one per colour), the press set up and colour-matched, and the run long enough to spread that setup over. That is why every supplier quotes a minimum order quantity — plate and setup cost the same whether you print ten rolls or a thousand.

Two practical consequences follow:

  • MOQs are counted in cartons of rolls, not single rolls. A “carton” here is the supplier’s pack quantity of finished rolls. The exact minimum depends on tape width, roll length, number of colours and the film in use, which is why a fixed number printed in an article ages badly — WhatsApp us the spec you have in mind and we will give you the current MOQ for it.
  • The plate is a one-time asset. Once your plate exists, repeat orders skip that cost and usually run faster. This is why the second order of printed tape almost always looks better on paper than the first — and why it pays to get the artwork right the first time rather than revising the plate later.

If your monthly carton volume is small or irregular, say so up front. A supplier being straight with you will tell you when plain tape plus a label is still the right answer — see the comparison below.

What design specs actually print well on OPP tape?

OPP tape is printed by flexography: a flexible plate transfers ink onto a thin polypropylene film moving at speed. Flexo on film is superb at bold, solid marks and unforgiving with fine detail. Designs that work:

  • One or two spot colours. Most branded tape you see — logo plus a line of text — is a single colour on a clear or coloured film base. Each extra colour means an extra plate and tighter registration, so cost rises and tolerance shrinks. Two colours cover almost every real branding need.
  • Bold marks, not fine ones. Chunky logos, heavy line weights and text sized to stay legible on a moving carton. Thin serifs, hairline rules and small reversed-out type tend to fill in or break up on film.
  • Safe margins. Keep critical elements away from the tape edges — slitting and web movement mean anything tight to the edge risks being clipped. Let background colour bleed; keep the logo and text comfortably inside.
  • Design around the repeat length. Your artwork repeats along the roll in a fixed cycle set by the plate cylinder, so the design must look right where it meets itself — a logo-and-tagline unit with even spacing repeats cleanly; a design that only works as a single centred composition does not.

What disappoints: photographs, fine gradients and full-colour artwork. Flexo on OPP lays down flat, solid ink — a gradient turns into visible banding and a photo turns to mud. The fix is simple: use the one-colour version of your logo that your designer almost certainly has, or ask us what simplification will hold up on press.

Is printed tape really cheaper than plain tape plus labels?

Compare complete costs per sealed carton, not roll price against roll price. A printed roll costs more per metre than a plain roll from the standard OPP range — that premium is real and you should price it. But the plain-tape route’s true cost has three parts:

  • The label itself — a second consumable with its own price per piece, its own MOQ, its own stock to count and reorder.
  • The labour to apply it — a separate step on every single carton. Even at a few seconds per carton, across thousands of cartons a month that is real paid time, and it is the step that gets skipped when the line is busy.
  • The failure rate — labels applied over dusty or humid cartons lift and fall off in transit, which matters in Malaysian conditions where un-airconditioned storage at 30-38°C and high humidity is the norm. A fallen label is wasted money and a plain brown box arriving at your customer.

The framework: (printed-tape premium per carton) versus (label cost per carton + application labour per carton + reprint/failure allowance). The premium per carton shrinks as volume rises, because the one-time plate cost spreads across more metres; the label route’s cost per carton is flat forever. That is why there is a crossover point, and why steady monthly shippers sit past it while occasional shippers often do not. Ask us to run the numbers on your actual volumes — and while you are cutting packaging cost, the rest of the levers are in our guide on reducing packaging costs.

How does printed tape act as tamper evidence?

A carton sealed with plain tape can be opened in transit, pilfered and resealed with any roll of the same beige tape, and nobody can tell. A carton sealed with your printed tape cannot be invisibly resealed — any break in the printed seal, or a patch of plain tape over your print, is obvious at the receiving dock, so disputes get settled by looking at the carton. For goods passing through multiple hands — courier networks, consolidators, marketplace fulfilment — this is often worth as much as the branding.

What mistakes do first-time buyers make?

  • Type too small. A phone number or URL set small enough to look tidy in the artwork file is illegible on a carton two metres away. Set text as if it must be read across a loading bay.
  • Full-colour artwork. As above — the full-colour logo with gradients and photographic elements will not survive flexo on film. Send the flat one- or two-colour mark instead.
  • Ordering one width for every carton. A width that suits your large export cartons overwhelms a small parcel box and wastes printed metres. Match tape width to your actual carton mix before you commit a print run to a single size.
  • Treating the first order as a big order. Order the sensible minimum first, confirm the print, the colour and how the tape runs in your dispensers, then scale up on the repeat where the per-roll economics are better anyway.
  • Forgetting the machine. If cartons are sealed by a carton sealing machine rather than hand dispensers, say so when you enquire — roll length, core and film spec need to match the machine.

Printed tape is one line in a bigger consumables picture — cartons, film, void fill, dispensers. If you are reviewing all of it, start with our guide on how to buy packaging materials in Malaysia.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom printed tape?

MOQs for printed tape are set in cartons of rolls, and the number moves with tape width, roll length, film type and how many colours you print. Rather than quote a figure that will be out of date, WhatsApp us your width, length and design (number of colours) and we will confirm the current MOQ and price for that exact spec.

Can I print my logo in full colour on OPP tape?

Technically more colours are possible, but flexographic printing on OPP film is at its best with one or two solid spot colours. Fine gradients and photographic artwork band and blur on film, and every additional colour adds a plate and cost. The one-colour version of your logo almost always looks sharper on tape than the full-colour original.

Does printed tape stick as well as plain OPP tape?

Yes. The print sits on the film side, not the adhesive side, so a printed OPP tape seals with the same adhesive performance as its plain equivalent in the same grade and thickness. Choose the tape spec for your carton weight and storage conditions first, then add the print to it.

Is printed tape worth it for a small business?

It depends on volume and regularity. If you ship a steady number of cartons every month, you will likely pass the crossover point where printed tape beats tape plus labels on total cost — and you get the tamper evidence and branding on top. If you ship occasionally or your volumes swing hard, plain tape with a label keeps you flexible, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a print run you will sit on.
