Above 15 kg the question is the board, not yet the tape. A 15 kg box weighs about 33 lb and needs at least a 26 ECT board. Water-activated gummed paper tape bonds into the board fibre instead of gripping its surface, which is why it holds heavy cartons where OPP tape fails — but plain and reinforced are different grades under ASTM D5749, and you get the one you ask for.

Key takeaways

  • Certify the board first. No tape rescues an under-rated box.
  • Type I is reinforced; Type II is plain, graded A, B or C.
  • Our Carton Sealing Failure Guide puts the switch at roughly 20–30 kg.
  • Budget for the line change — a wetting dispenser and dry storage — not just the roll.

Before changing anything, read a failed carton: the failure mode tells you whether tape was ever the problem.

How does water-activated gummed paper tape hold a heavy carton?

It stops behaving like tape. Ordinary packing tape is pressure-sensitive: the adhesive grips the outside of the board. Gummed paper tape is kraft paper coated with a starch adhesive that does nothing until wetted: water activates it and it keys into the cardboard’s own fibres.

That changes where a seal gives way. Pressure-sensitive tape fails at the glue line; a wetted gummed seal is anchored inside the fibre — the mechanical, permanent bond described in our carton sealing failure guide — so it cannot be lifted and re-stuck. The seal is therefore tamper-evident, and because the adhesive dries into the fibre, it takes on damp board that defeats a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Plain or reinforced? The ASTM D5749 line for your purchase order

Reinforced, once cartons pass roughly 20 to 30 kg — but the two are defined grades, not adjectives. There is a published standard for this product and almost nobody here quotes it. ASTM D5749 sets its own scope as: “This specification covers plain and reinforced paper gummed adhesive tapes suitable for securing and banding paper products and closing fiberboard boxes.” Its classification is the vocabulary to order with:

Type I — reinforced Type II — plain
Construction Two strips of paper in roll form, reinforcement between them (fibreglass in the grades sold here) One strip of paper
Classes and grades Strippable (Class 1) or nonstrippable (Class 2) Grade A light duty, B medium duty, C heavy duty

So “heavy duty” is a defined grade within plain tape — Grade C — and a different thing from reinforced. Ask for “heavy duty gummed tape” and you can get either. Holland Manufacturing grades reinforced tape H-20 light duty to H-80 extra-heavy. Other Malaysian catalogues call plain gum tape unsuitable for heavy-duty packing — plain kraft for light cartons, reinforcement for heavy parcels — but none says where light ends and heavy begins.

At what carton weight does the switch pay?

Roughly 20 to 30 kg. But check the box first: a board rating is certified, tape strength is not. The Box Maker’s Certificate on the bottom flap carries a gross weight limit — the maximum weight the box is certified to carry. On that scale, for single-wall board rated by edge crush test:

ECT rating (lb/in) Certified gross weight Roughly
23 20 lb 9 kg
26 35 lb 16 kg
29 50 lb 23 kg
32 65 lb 29 kg

A 15 kg load is about 33 lb: it needs at least a 26 ECT board and has almost no margin on one. If 18 kg cartons go out in 23 ECT boxes, no tape fixes that. With the board right:

  • Up to about 15 kg. A correctly specified OPP tape is enough; the choice is adhesive chemistry, covered in hot melt, acrylic and solvent rubber OPP tape.
  • Roughly 15–20 kg. Check board grade, tape width and seal pattern first. Our guide to tape width and seal pattern puts a full H-pattern seal here: one strip along the centre seam, one along each end seam.
  • Roughly 20–30 kg and up. That same guide moves to 72 mm rather than three overlapping 48 mm strips, and puts the switch to gummed paper tape here; ask by ASTM type and grade before you buy.

What 2S stocks, and what you have to ask for

The gummed paper tape published on our own site is the plain grade: a single kraft paper carrier coated with metamorphic starch adhesive, listed at 0.125 mm. Read against ASTM D5749’s definitions, it is Type II. That is a catalogue reading, not a lab test, so confirm the grade with us if it is load-bearing.

Sizes run 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 mm, all at 60 yards, packed 60 rolls a carton at 24 mm down to 20 at 72 mm.

Need reinforcement, not a wider plain roll? Type I reinforced gummed tape is a separate specification — ask by ASTM type and grade, not by the words “heavy duty”. Or use filament tape, the fibreglass already in our catalogue: polypropylene film reinforced with fibreglass filaments, listed for reinforcing the package and thickening a heavy carton. What we publish today is the plain grade and filament tape.

What changes on your packing line

The tape must be wetted, so it needs a gummed paper dispenser rather than a hand gun: it takes a one-litre water bottle for the moistening process, and wets the tape through a double-brush assembly for an even degree of wetting.

Storage is the Malaysian wrinkle. You are keeping a roll whose adhesive is meant to be activated by moisture, in air the Malaysian Meteorological Department describes as uniform temperature, high humidity and copious rainfall, with a maximum daily average relative humidity of over 94% almost everywhere. Keep rolls boxed, off the floor and away from doorways — our guidance on handling and storing tape applies here more than anywhere.

When gummed paper tape is the wrong roll

Four cases where a different roll is the right roll: cartons that get reopened, anything stored above 60 °C, cold storage, and light parcels in small volumes. In each one, the one-way bond that has to be wetted on the line is a liability or a cost that returns nothing.

  • You open and reclose cartons. Our specification answers yes to residue after removal — poor for goods inspected and resealed in the same box.
  • The cartons sit somewhere genuinely hot. Gummed paper tape is rated to 60 °C, OPP packing tape to 80 °C. If heat is the failure mode, start with why packing tape peels in Malaysian heat.
  • Cold storage. SKPT siliconised kraft paper tape is the specified paper tape for low-temperature work.
  • Light parcels, small volumes. The dispenser, the water and the slower cycle return nothing.

Frequently asked questions

At what carton weight should I switch to water-activated gummed paper tape?

Check the board first: a 15 kg carton is about 33 lb, needing at least a 26 ECT single-wall board. Then our carton sealing failure guide puts the switch at roughly 20 to 30 kg, or wherever tamper evidence matters.

What is the difference between plain and reinforced gummed paper tape?

ASTM D5749 defines reinforced tape as Type I, two strips of paper with reinforcement between them, and plain tape as Type II, one strip graded A light, B medium or C heavy duty. Reinforced is the one for genuinely heavy cartons; “heavy duty” alone is ambiguous, because the standard also uses it for plain Grade C.

Do I need a special dispenser for gummed paper tape?

Yes. The adhesive only works once wetted, so it needs a gummed paper dispenser, not a hand-held tape gun. It holds a one-litre water bottle for the moistening process and wets the tape through a double-brush assembly.

Can gummed paper tape be removed cleanly if I need to reopen a carton?

No. Our specification records residue after removal, and the tape cannot be lifted and re-stuck. That is what makes the seal tamper-evident, and the reason not to use it on cartons that get reopened.

Is gummed paper tape better than OPP tape in a hot Malaysian warehouse?

Not automatically. We rate gummed paper tape to 60 °C and OPP packing tape to 80 °C. Gummed paper wins on heavy cartons because the starch adhesive bonds into the board fibre rather than sitting on it — a load argument, not a heat one.
